Fancy Color Intensity

Strength and Brightness

When it comes to fancy colored diamonds, “intensity” simply means how strong or bright the color of the diamond looks. Some diamonds might have a light, soft color, while others can have a deep, bold hue that really stands out. The stronger and more vibrant the color, the rarer and more valuable the diamond usually is. Think of it like choosing a paint color—some shades are soft and subtle, while others are bright and vivid. This range of intensity is what makes fancy-colored diamonds so unique and special.

As shown in the diagram below, fancy colored diamonds are categorized as Fancy Light Pink, Fancy Pink, Fancy Intense, and Fancy Vivid. In addition, each of these categories can be further divided into three to four gradations. Some of these differences are visible to the eye and they also affect pricing. For example, an Intense grade “1” has a color closer to Fancy, while an Intense grade “4” has a color closer to Vivid. However, actual grading reports only display Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, or Fancy Vivid. This shows how important it is to examine the diamond in person when making a judgment.
